More Info on Desert Dwellers

Desert Dwellers has its roots in the Southern California dance collective known as Moontribe, famous in the electronic underground for organizing tribal dance rituals at magical locations deep within the vast desert expanses of both Southern California and New Mexico. Initially a collaboration in the late 1990's between electronic music pioneers Amani Friend & Treavor Moontribe (aka Amani vs Teapot), Desert Dwellers grew to incorporate Six Degrees recording artist Rara Avis in 2005.

Skillfully blending deep bass, earthy percussion, etheric voices and culture-crossing instrumentation into a sonic incense for mind and body, Desert Dwellers offers a spellbinding hybrid with echoes of our tribal past and future. Using the internet as a collaborative space in which concept albums are created, these sound alchemists use cutting edge techniques that blend the modern edge of electronica with the ancient sounds of cultures past. The result has been the prolific production of genre blending dance tracks and downtempo grooves that make for truly memorable listening experiences.  The trio has also collaborated heavily over the years with an amazingly talented array of artists. Craig Kohland (Shaman's Dream) has been supporting the band for years as a producer and guest percussionist. Sarah West, Meagan Chandler and Yamuna Wali are often featured vocalists on their albums, and they have at times been joined in the studio by Sattva Ananda, Michael Kott, Ricardin, and many other talented artists.

They have remixed artists such as Donna DeLory, Deep Forest, Girish, David Starfire, Deya Dova, Deva Premal, Jai Uttal, and many underground electronic artists. They have released their work on their own digital labels Desert Trax & YogiTunes as well as on such labels as White Swan, Omnis, Iboga, System, Flow, Six Degrees, and Native State.

Amani Friend

Amani tastefully weaves soundscapes that immerse the listener in a journey to inner spaces and otherworldly sonic dimensions. He is a pioneering electronic music producer in the realms of electronic, dub and world fusion, having spent the past 24 years exploring where these dynamic styles of music co-exist. As the primary creative force behind the Desert Dwellers music catalog, Amani has produced six albums for White Swan Records in a series called DownTemple Dub. His latest offering in 2012 is called DownTemple Dub: Remixed, drawing on an amazing network of cutting edge ethnic-dub music producers to re-imagine the earlier Desert Dwellers chill yoga tracks into a kaleidoscope of midtempo breaks and ornately textured ambience.

Aside from Desert Dwellers, Amani has also co-founded the YogiTunes digital music store, where he is currently head of A&R and music acquisition; he has produced several full length Desert Dwellers albums on the YogiTunes music label; he has co-founded an electronic music label with music partner Treavor Moontribe called Desert Trax, featuring two more Desert Dwellers remix albums in 2012 called Recalibrated vol 1 & 2; he has remixed artists such as Karsh Kale, David Starfire, Kalya Scintilla, EarthRise SoundSystem, Adham Shaikh, Deva Premal, Jai Uttal, Donna DeLory, Girish, and Deep Forest, and his music can be heard on countless yoga DVDs by teachers such as Shiva Rea, Hemalayaa, and Duncan Wong; in addition to Desert Dwellers, Amani is involved in many other unique music collaborations such as Shaman’s Dream, Liquid Bloom, Variant Field, and Chase the Lazer; he is also known as a digital visionary artist, web designer, and designs the majority of his own album covers.

Treavor Moontribe

Treavor Moontribe is one of the co-founders of the Los Angeles based “Moontribe Collective” and its legendary full moon desert gatherings. Since 1993, these events have been at the core of Southern California’s underground electronic music scene. Treavor established himself as one of the top Djs in LA thru these events and has since traveled the world from Brazil to Japan to Morocco, Portugal, Germany and all over North America. As a Dj it’s always been his diversity that’s set him apart from his peers. As Treavor always says himself he refuses to be “Genre-Fied” or be a one dimensional DJ. His love for music spans multiple genres and his DJing reflects this. Although he is most well known for Psy Trance and Techno styles, Treavor prides himself on having the ability to fit in anywhere and anytime.

Over the years Treavor has also established himself as a dynamic music producer having released music under several project names for labels like Bedrock, Six Degrees and White Swan Records. His most notable project by far is Desert Dwellers, which is a “virtual band” with members in multiple west coast US states. It all began in 2000 when Treavor first got in the studio with Amani Friend. They instantly clicked and started releasing music under the name Amani vs. Teapot. Out of that project came Desert Dwellers and over the years they’ve released multiple albums and countless singles, EP’s and remixes. After many years being a strictly studio project, Desert Dwellers has built up quite the fan base and the demand for live performances continues to grow. With that the once strictly studio project is slowly but surely becoming a real life band and touring seems inevitable.

Rara Avis

Rara first exploded on to the scene with his hit debut CD "Beneath the Radar" in 2003. Subsequently scouted by his favorite indy record label Six Degrees Records, Rara began remix work for artists on their roster and production a 5 song digital EP entitled "Shaktified" released in 2005.

Since then he has been nothing short of prolific releasing a solo or collaborative album every 3-6 months including regular work with Shaman's Dream and Desert Dwellers, in partnership with Sounds True and White Swan Records respectively.

Whole heartedly embraced by dance floors all over the world and Rara has also had a deep impact in the rapidly growing yoga and conscious lifestyle community. Writing music for well known yoga figures such as Shiva Rea, Duncan Wong, Jai Uttal, Max Strom, Sharon & David Life (Jiva Mukti, NYC), Desiree Rumbaugh, Hemalayaa Behl, Ashley Turner, Hala Khouri and many others. His music bridges the worlds of conscious dance with positive lifestyle making it the ultimate companion soundtrack for the conscious consumer.

His styles are always seeking to blend genres as he has an eclectic array of training in blues, jazz, classical, ethnic, electronic, and contemporary. He has earned a degree in jazz and classical studies from Malaspina University on Vancouver Island and uses his well formed knowledge of music theory, composition and arranging to produce expertly crafted songs with an equal blend of live instrumentation and programmed electronic elements.

Healing has long been a part of Rara's mission with music. Therefore movement and inspiration that lead toward a greater sense of peace and relaxation are important ingredients that Rara adds into every composition and performance.
Rara has toured extensively throughout the US and Canada always bringing a unique element of improvised instrumental performance to the dance and festival floor while at the same time delivering an experience that always leaves people feeling deeply integrated and at home within themselves.

More info on KAYLA SCINTILLA-

Kalya Scintilla is a benevolent being incarnate from the star system womp. Drawing inspiration from Nature, Love, tribal energy, healing, sacred geometry, and many other of life's wonders, Kalya's music is quite unique in style and is definitely an interesting cross over between Dubstep/ Glitch Hop, the seductive sound of the Middle East and traditional Gypsy. His debut album 'Dance the Spiral Never Ending' has been given a warm welcome the world over, and sits near the pinnacle of Addictech.com's 2012 yearly chart.
Dripping molasses over a fractal tabla, a journey through an enchanted forest, the soundtrack to an epic dream scape. A successful attempt to resonate the heavens and earth channeled through sound waves.
